About me
Michael Bonfigli is a Washington DC based photojournalist with over 20 years of experience photographing a wide range of topics around the world for magazines and NGO's.
Raised by Argentine parents in a small town in Vermont, Michael's interest in Photography and Latin America culture began with a family trip to Buenos Aires when he was 10. Michael was drawn to both the intensity of life in Buenos Aires and his Uncle’s own photographs of the area.
After studying Art History and Politics at the University of Barcelona during college, Michael joined the Peace Corps to work with the Miskito Indians on the Northern Coast of Honduras. It was there that he became specifically interested in documentary photography. After the Peace Corps, he received a Masters degree in education at Indiana Universityand was a member of the prestigious Year Book staff. Influenced by his Magnum photographer classmate, Chien Chi Chang, photography remained a constant pursuit. Six years after graduating from Inidana Michael decided to pursue photography as a career.
Much of Michael’s personal work focuses on Latin Ameican social issues. Michael is currently working on a long term project in the Miskito Coast region of Honduras exploring the lobster diver trade and the economic significance it has on the region.
Michael lives in Washington, DC with his 5 year old son, Luca.
